Is it time for a mask bonfire?

Today the CDC released new guidelines for vaccinated persons and mask use. Honestly, my epi colleagues are not super excited about these changes as we agree it may be premature. Science shows vaccines are VERY effective; however, we have not reached herd immunity. Variants are a threat, and even a small percentage of vaccinated people are still susceptible.

According to CDC, the following is OKAY for FULLY vaccinated people

·       If you walk into a room (indoors) with people who may or may not be vaccinated – No Mask

·       If you go outside – No Mask

·       If you go to the doctor's office, clinic, hospital, nursing facility or other healthcare center - MASK

·       If you go on a plane, train, or bus OR any other venue with lots of people from other places – MASK

If you are NOT vaccinated, masks should still be worn inside and outside when distancing is not possible. There is plenty of vaccine, literally hundreds of millions have received it, so if you’re a wait and see – it’s time.

If you still want to be careful AND you’re fully vaccinated –

·       Wear a mask in crowded spaces or whenever you feel uncomfortable

·       Wear a mask around older persons and those with weakened immune systems

A note about sensitivity –

MANY people (those in cancer treatment, with immune compromised conditions, or certain chronic conditions) face serious illness with COVID-19 and cannot mount a sufficient response to the vaccine. We need to be respectful of those who choose to keep wearing a mask and be aware of the invisible needs of vulnerable people who might need us to wear one.

Who is fully vaccinated?

Anyone who received two doses of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine two or more weeks ago OR one dose of the Janssen vaccine two or more weeks ago.

What about school?

The CDC’s change really doesn’t affect schools. Adolescents 12+ became eligible for vaccination TODAY and will not be immune before the end of the year. What is not an issue – kids playing outside with distance and no mask. I fully expect school guidance to change as the summer progresses as all school-age children should be eligible for the Pfizer vaccine by September.

If you want to get your adolescent vaccinated (my 14yo goes tomorrow), there are many options.

Roosevelt High School

  • The first dose clinic will be Wednesday, May 12 and the second dose clinic will be on June 2.

    • Roosevelt High School Large Gym -- enter at the South Commons (entrance by the track)

    • 3:30-5:30pm -- school dismissal traffic will be lighter after 3:45pm

One final note of optimism…we’re on a really positive track. The near future looks safer and more optimistic than ever, and I’m really hopeful we will be through this soon. Stay safe and healthy 😊
